Meet Sonja: The Story Behind She Thrives Athletics
If you're reading this, chances are you're an athlete who's striving for more.
Maybe you're battling self-doubt before competitions. Maybe you're struggling with confidence after an injury. Maybe you're feeling burned out, overwhelmed, or frustrated because your mind isn't cooperating with all the hard work you're putting in physically.
First, know this: you're not alone.
My name is Sonja, and I'm the founder of She Thrives Athletics. I help female athletes build confidence, resilience, and mental strength so they can perform at their best—both in sports and in life.
But before I became a mental performance coach, I was an athlete myself.
My Athletic Journey
Sports have shaped who I am.
Growing up, I competed in gymnastics, softball, and volleyball. Through years of training, competition, and commitment, I eventually became a six-time state champion in volleyball and earned the opportunity to play at the Division I level and in the Junior Olympic Games.
From the outside, my athletic journey looked successful.
But like many athletes, I experienced the internal challenges that often go unseen.
The pressure to perform.
The fear of making mistakes.
The expectations we place on ourselves.
The emotional highs and lows that come with competition.
I learned firsthand that athletic success isn't just about physical ability. It's also about what's happening between your ears.
Why Mental Performance Matters
Athletes spend countless hours developing physical skills.
We practice serves, swings, lifts, footwork, conditioning, and game strategy.
Yet many athletes are never taught how to manage:
Performance anxiety
Self-doubt
Perfectionism
Fear of failure
Burnout
Loss of confidence
Recovery from mistakes
Stress and pressure
When these challenges show up, athletes often assume something is wrong with them.
In reality, these experiences are incredibly common.
The difference is that some athletes learn the mental skills needed to navigate them effectively.
That's where coaching comes in.
My Professional Background
In addition to my athletic experience, I have dedicated my career to helping people navigate challenges and build resilience.
I am a Clinical Social Worker (CSW) with advanced training in mental health, trauma-informed care, and human behavior. I have also completed specialized training in sport psychology and athletic counseling.
Throughout my career, I've worked with individuals facing anxiety, stress, life transitions, and performance challenges. These experiences have given me a deep understanding of how thoughts, emotions, and behavior impact success.
Today, I combine that professional expertise with my athletic background to help athletes strengthen their mental game.
Why I Created She Thrives Athletics
I created She Thrives Athletics because I saw a need for support specifically designed for female athletes.
Female athletes face unique challenges.
Many struggle with confidence despite their accomplishments.
Many carry enormous pressure to excel academically, athletically, and socially.
Many are incredibly hard on themselves and hold themselves to impossible standards.
I wanted to create a space where athletes could develop the mental skills necessary to thrive—not just survive.
A place where confidence can be built.
Where setbacks can become opportunities for growth.
Where athletes learn that their worth extends far beyond a scoreboard, stat sheet, or scholarship offer.
What Coaching With Me Looks Like
Mental performance coaching isn't therapy.
It's a collaborative process focused on helping athletes strengthen the skills that support performance and well-being.
Together, we may work on:
Building confidence
Managing performance anxiety
Developing mental resilience
Improving focus and concentration
Navigating setbacks and injuries
Strengthening self-talk
Managing pressure
Creating sustainable performance habits
My goal is not only to help athletes perform better but to help them develop skills that will serve them long after their playing days are over.
A Final Message to Athletes
If you're struggling, it doesn't mean you're weak.
If you're nervous before competition, you're not broken.
If you've lost confidence, confidence can be rebuilt.
Athletic success isn't about being fearless. It's about learning how to perform, grow, and thrive even when challenges arise.
That's the work I love doing every day.
And if you're ready to strengthen your mental game, I'd be honored to be part of your journey.
Welcome to She Thrives Athletics.
